2012年1月12日。
先日、雪の金閣寺を撮影した後、同じく強く訪れたいと願っていたのが、京都・龍安寺である。
前年11月23日、30日。
私の撮影史の中でも屈指の出来となった紅葉の龍安寺。
その龍安寺の冬を撮影したかった。
龍安寺の石庭には、多くの大きな石が据えられている。
それらは山と海を表すという。
なるほど、と思った。
石庭の裏手にある蹲踞（つくばい）は、徳川光圀公の寄進によるものだと、久しぶりに親友が思い出させてくれた。
そこに刻まれた言葉は「吾唯足知（足るを知る）」。
水戸三国公に敬意を抱く私にとって、
この言葉とともに過ごした今日の龍安寺は、実に豊かな一日となった。

Ryōan-ji in Winter — Knowing Sufficiency, the Silent Universe of Stone

After recently photographing the snow-covered Kinkaku-ji, the place I strongly wished to visit next was Ryōan-ji in Kyoto.
On November 23 and 30 of the previous year, I photographed Ryōan-ji in autumn foliage, one of the finest results in my photographic history.
I wanted to photograph that same Ryōan-ji in winter.
In the rock garden of Ryōan-ji, many large stones are carefully set in place.
They are said to represent mountains and the sea.
I found myself thinking, yes, that makes sense.
Behind the rock garden stands a tsukubai, and after a long while an old friend reminded me that it was donated by Tokugawa Mitsukuni.
The words carved upon it read, “I know only sufficiency.”
For me, who holds deep respect for the Mito Tokugawa lineage,
this day at Ryōan-ji, spent together with those words, became a truly rich and fulfilling one.
