When Birds Mattered More Than Flowers
— Arashiyama in Winter, Light and Gaze (February 25, 2016)

2016年2月25日、京都・嵐山。
この頃の私は、花ではなく、野鳥に会いに来ていた。

大覚寺、天龍寺、嵐山の池と庭。
ヒヨドリ、イカル、オオバン、コゲラ、メジロ、ツグミ、セグロセキレイ。
冬の晴天のもと、多くの野鳥が同時に動き、同時に存在していた。

何年も通い続け、ある年には百日以上訪れた庭。
石に顔が現れ、石までもがこちらを認識しているように感じられた。
苔、シダ、比叡山を望む視線。
時間が積層した庭の沈黙。

祇王寺では、餌付けされたヤマガラとメジロが至近距離でこちらを見つめ、
ついには鶯の雄まで姿を現した。
野鳥の中で、最も人懐こい存在として、
私は今でもヤマガラがとても好きである。

これは、
自然と私が互いに存在を認識していた時代の記録である。

On February 25, 2016, in Arashiyama, Kyoto.
At that time, I came not for flowers, but to meet birds.

Daikaku-ji, Tenryu-ji, ponds and gardens of Arashiyama.
Brown-eared bulbuls, Japanese grosbeaks, Eurasian coots,
pygmy woodpeckers, Japanese white-eyes, thrushes, and white wagtails.
Under clear winter light, many kinds of birds moved and coexisted at once.

These were gardens I visited endlessly—
in some years, more than one hundred days.
Faces appeared in stones; even the stones seemed to recognize me.
Moss, ferns, and a distant gaze toward Mt. Hiei.
Silence layered with time.

At Gio-ji Temple, nuthatches and white-eyes watched me from just inches away,
and finally, even a male bush warbler appeared.
Among all birds, I still love nuthatches the most—
the most trusting of all wild birds.

This is a record of a time
when nature and I quietly acknowledged each other’s existence.
