American Riots Handed China Material for “Lecturing” the United States: The CCP’s Smokescreen Over Hong Kong

Based on a Sankei Shimbun article, this piece examines how the Chinese Communist Party used the protests and riots following the death of a Black man in police custody in the United States as material to strike back against U.S. criticism over Hong Kong’s national security law. It records China’s information warfare, in which American turmoil is used to promote the supposed superiority of dictatorship and deflect criticism over Hong Kong and Xinjiang.

Your riots were so foolish that they provided perfect material for being “lectured” by a country where bottomless evil and plausible lies are compounded by the evil of one-party Communist dictatorship.
The following is from today’s Sankei Shimbun.

U.S. Demonstrations Become Material for China’s Counterattack: A Smokescreen Over “Hong Kong” and a Display of the Superiority of Dictatorship
“Beijing = Yoshiaki Nishimi”
The issue of protests and riots spreading across the United States in the wake of the death of a Black man from police violence has become perfect material for China’s Xi Jinping leadership to launch a kind of “retaliation” against the Trump administration, which has criticized the introduction of a national security law in Hong Kong.
If the impression spreads within China that “the United States cannot control either the novel coronavirus or the confusion caused by demonstrations inside its own country,” the superiority of Communist Party rule can also be advertised.
For the Xi leadership, which is facing troubles both at home and abroad, it is, so to speak, a godsend.
At a press conference on the 1st, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said of the turmoil in the United States that it “shows the seriousness of problems such as racial discrimination and violent law enforcement by police,” and lectured the U.S. government to guarantee the legal rights of minority races.
*Black Americans, China used your riots to lecture the U.S. government.
There could be no greater foolishness.
Your riots were so foolish that they provided perfect material for being “lectured” by a country where bottomless evil and plausible lies are compounded by the evil of one-party Communist dictatorship.*
In addition, Hua Chunying, another spokesperson of the same ministry, retweeted on Twitter a statement by the chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, calling on U.S. authorities to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination, and showed a posture of fighting together with Africa by saying, “All lives matter.
We firmly support our African friends.”
China has repeatedly used human rights issues inside the United States as a “barrage” to avoid criticism of its own problems.
In July of last year, when the U.S. administration was intensifying its criticism of the repression of Uyghurs in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and the strengthening of control in Hong Kong, the Chinese government-affiliated China Society for Human Rights Studies released a document criticizing racial discrimination in the United States.
It criticized the United States by saying, “The United States prides itself on being a guardian of human rights, but its false nature stands out.”
Chinese media criticized the Trump administration, which had supported “violent demonstrations in Hong Kong,” for suggesting the deployment of troops against demonstrations inside its own country, calling it a “double standard.”
A Chinese reporter in Beijing pointed out that it had “given China’s official media a pretext for attacking the United States.”
Inside China, since March, as the damage from the novel coronavirus expanded in the United States and Europe beyond that in China, praise for Chinese authorities, aided by the propaganda effects of state-run media, came to dominate the internet more than criticism of them.
A political researcher in Beijing analyzed that “nationalism is rising, with people saying, ‘Is this what the United States has become? I am glad to be living in China,’” and said, “Without Trump, the current Xi Jinping administration would have been in a very difficult situation.”
