After watching Woodstock carefully once again, MIKIO KISARA reflects on performances by The Who and Ten Years After and considers rock and roll as music shaped by the European working class and rooted in African American music.
The essay presents rock as a form of protest that rejected the preservation of the existing order and sought genuine freedom, thought, soul, and the sound of the twenty-first century.
What I Realized After Watching Woodstock Properly Once Again
The day before yesterday, I watched Woodstock carefully and recognized something anew.
Anyone who listens to The Who and Ten Years After will surely realize that twentieth-century rock and roll was the music of the European working class, living within societies that still retained powerful class divisions.
This was a natural development of rock and roll, whose roots lay in African American music.
Rock and roll began as music of protest.
It developed into music that rejected the preservation of the existing order and sought genuine freedom, genuine thought, a genuine soul, and the “sound of the twenty-first century.”
When we remember that rulers throughout history, in both East and West, generally listened to classical music as part of their cultivated education, it becomes understandable that most of them, unless confronted by an extraordinary crisis, were inclined to preserve the existing order.
