Background
In May 2020, the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, triggered protests that spread across the United States.
In some areas, however, the protests developed into riots, looting, arson, and the destruction of statues and monuments, bringing profound conflicts over American history, political order, education, the media, and policing to the surface.
The following is excerpted from “The Movement Toward a Communist Revolution Stirring in the United States,” an article written by Toshiyuki Hayakawa, an editor at The Sekai Nippo, and published in the monthly magazine WiLL.
This article presented an interpretation of American society and the 2020 presidential election from the standpoint of that time.
It is reproduced here as a historical record, with its original context and arguments made clear.
This is an article that should be read not only by the Japanese people, but especially by the American people.
The Carefully Planned Strategy of Marxists Seeking to Destroy the Good Old America
The Goals of the Communists
Thirty years have passed since the end of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.
A communist revolution may now occur in the United States, the leader of the free world.
Who could ever have imagined such a situation?
“What is happening now is just like the French Revolution.”
That was how Lee Edwards, a prominent historian at the conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation, described the present social situation.
In American conservative discourse, the alarming word “revolution” is heard almost every day.
There is even an atmosphere of being on the “eve of revolution,” as though the country were about to be taken over by radical left-wing forces.
It would be fair to say that American society changed completely after the death of a Black man involving a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in May.
The protests that spread across the country in the blink of an eye developed into riots, looting, arson, and other destructive acts, while statues and monuments to historical figures were pulled down in many places.
The targets were not limited to statues of Confederate leaders who had defended slavery during the Civil War.
Even statues of the “Founding Fathers,” including the first president, George Washington, and the third president, Thomas Jefferson, who drafted the Declaration of Independence, were targeted.
Conservatives feel a profound sense of crisis because the mass movement has been hijacked by radical left-wing forces and is creating an unprecedented tide of anti-Americanism and sympathy toward communism.
What is happening in the United States is a preliminary step toward a revolution being systematically advanced by radical left-wing forces.
One book clearly explains this.
It is The Naked Communist, written in 1958 by former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Cleon Skousen.
At a time when little literature about communism was available, the book alerted the public to its threat and became a bestseller.
It became an important reference in the White House and intelligence agencies and was a celebrated work that influenced Cold War strategy.
There is a reason why it remains in print even though it was written more than sixty years ago.
To expose the schemes of communists seeking to take over the United States, Skousen added “The 45 Communist Goals” in 1961, and many of them correspond to what is now happening in America.
Let us consider several examples.
Goal 15: Capture one or both of the political parties.
Goal 17: Gain control of the schools.
Goal 20: Infiltrate the media.
Goal 21: Remove all good sculptures from parks and buildings.
Goal 26: Present homosexuality and promiscuity as “normal, natural, and healthy.”
Goal 30: Discredit the American Founding Fathers.
Goal 38: Transfer some of the power of arrest from the police to social agencies.
Goal 42: Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate American traditions.
Goals 22, 30, 38, and 42, in particular, are precisely what the activists conducting protests throughout the country are seeking to achieve.
America’s radical left is steadily advancing toward the goals enumerated by Skousen.
It should now be evident that describing the present moment as the “eve of revolution” is neither conservative exaggeration nor a groundless fear.
Is the United States a “Racist Nation”?
The leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement, which is leading the protests, are in fact committed Marxists.
The BLM movement was founded by three Black women.
One of them, Patrisse Cullors, stated in a 2015 interview that she and co-founder Alicia Garza were “trained Marxists.”
In her autobiography, she also wrote that she had read and studied Mao Zedong, Marx, and Lenin and added their ideas to her knowledge.
Garza also stated in 2015 that Black lives could not be protected under capitalism because the two were like oil and water, thereby making clear that overthrowing capitalism was an objective of the movement.
Opinion polls show that support for the BLM movement has expanded considerably, but many Americans support it without knowing that the movement is being manipulated by Marxists.
Among the claims advanced by the BLM movement, the particularly dangerous one is the concept of “systemic racism.”
In the United States, racial discrimination is prohibited by law.
Systemic racism, however, is the idea that even where legal equality exists, racism is built into every institution, including politics, the economy, the judiciary, and education.
If racial discrimination cannot be stopped by law, the conclusion will be that the American system itself must be destroyed.
Although the expression has become commonplace in the media, it is in fact a dangerous concept that legitimizes revolution.
Although Black people account for only thirteen percent of the American population, the United States elected a Black president twice.
Although many racial problems remain to be addressed, the United States may be described as a country that has achieved a degree of racial harmony rarely seen elsewhere in the world.
Nevertheless, in a July poll conducted by The Wall Street Journal and NBC News, fifty-six percent of Americans said that American society was racist.
This shows that the BLM movement’s message condemning the United States as a racist nation has steadily penetrated American society.
The 1619 Project
Karl Marx incited class struggle between workers and capitalists.
The American left, however, incites conflict based not upon economic inequality but upon differences in identity, including race, ethnicity, sex, and sexual orientation.
This is what is known as “identity politics.”
The left constructs a framework in which white people are the oppressors and Black people are the oppressed, and it seeks to transform this antagonism into the energy of revolution.
Dividing the population into groups of oppressors and oppressed is Marxism itself.
To make Americans accept this antagonistic structure, the left has worked to instill white guilt in white people and a sense of victimhood in minorities.
The seventeenth of the “45 Communist Goals” is to “gain control of the schools.”
In reality, the educational system has been controlled by the left, and history has been taught for several generations on the basis of an anti-American, self-denigrating view of history.
The destruction of statues and monuments to historical figures may be regarded as the result of an education that teaches that the United States is an evil country in which greedy white people have exploited and discriminated against minorities.
The major media have also participated in attempts to magnify a sense of victimhood among Black Americans.
One example is The New York Times’ 1619 Project.
In August of the previous year, The New York Times published a one-hundred-page special issue in The New York Times Magazine arguing that the founding of the United States occurred not in 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was adopted, but in 1619, when the first Black slaves arrived.
Its objective was to implant in the public the historical interpretation that slavery constituted America’s true origin.
Nikole Hannah-Jones, the Black female New York Times journalist who wrote the lead essay for the 1619 Project, described American independence as follows:
“One of the primary reasons the colonists decided to declare their independence from Britain was because they wanted to protect the institution of slavery.”
According to this argument, the founding principle written in the Declaration of Independence—that all men are created equal—was false, and the primary purpose of independence was to protect the vested interests associated with slavery.
Even President Abraham Lincoln, who proclaimed emancipation, is portrayed as though he were a white supremacist, while America is condemned as an irredeemably dark society in which anti-Black racism runs in the country’s DNA.
It is not merely “fake news,” but “fake history.”
Nevertheless, schools throughout the country are adopting the 1619 Project as teaching material and incorporating it into their history curricula at an unprecedented pace.
Biden Joins Forces with Sanders
The greatest factor that brought the United States to the “eve of revolution” was the rapid leftward shift of the Democratic Party, one of the country’s two major political parties.
The fifteenth of the “45 Communist Goals” is to “capture one or both of the political parties,” and this too is becoming a reality.
On July 4, Independence Day, a shocking incident occurred in Baltimore, Maryland, when a mob pulled down a statue of Christopher Columbus and threw it into the harbor.
Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leader of the House and a native of Baltimore, responded:
“People will do what they do.”
The Speaker of the House occupies a position of great responsibility and stands second, after the vice president, in the presidential line of succession.
Yet rather than condemning the criminal destruction of public property, a person holding such a position made a remark that appeared to condone it.
When President Trump dispatched federal law-enforcement personnel to protect a federal building in Portland, Oregon, from mob attacks, Democrats accused them of behaving like the Gestapo, the Nazi secret police.
However intense partisan conflict may become before a presidential election, can it ever be acceptable to describe law-enforcement officers attempting to restore order against dangerous mobs as the Gestapo?
“This is the first time in my memory that the leaders of one of our two great political parties, the Democratic Party, are not coming out and condemning mob violence.”
Attorney General William Barr expressed his anger at a congressional hearing in July.
The preservation of public order should be an elementary consensus transcending party divisions.
But such common sense no longer applies within today’s Democratic Party, which gives priority to appeasing the radical left.
In the 2016 presidential election, the Democratic Party suffered the bitter experience of disunity when radical left-wing supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders rebelled against Hillary Clinton.
To avoid a repetition of that experience, former vice president and Democratic presidential candidate Joseph Biden has moved closer to the radical left, including by issuing joint policy recommendations with the Sanders camp.
To present a softer image, Sanders describes himself as a “democratic socialist.”
During the Cold War, however, he praised communist one-party dictatorships such as the Soviet Union and Cuba and had a history of supporting radical Marxist parties in the United States.
Biden prioritized winning the presidential election and joined forces with Sanders, whose true nature is that of a communist.
America Faces an Ultimate Choice
The Communist Party USA and other Marxist organizations in America have given Biden their full support.
Angela Davis, the Communist Party USA’s vice-presidential candidate in the presidential elections of 1980 and 1984, stated that Biden could be “most effectively pressured” into accepting the demands of the left.
In other words, the radical left believes that it can turn Biden into a puppet.
If a Biden administration is established, many people close to Sanders are likely to be appointed, creating what could become a radical left-wing administration.
Trump, meanwhile, delivered a speech on July 3, the day before Independence Day, at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, where the faces of former presidents are carved into the mountain.
He condemned the destruction of statues and monuments by radical activists as a “left-wing cultural revolution” and declared that “their goal is the end of America.”
The speech amounted to a declaration of war against the radical left.
His statement that no person who remains silent in the face of the destruction of this glorious heritage can lead the American people to a better future was directed at Biden, who avoided condemning the radical left.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s July speech on China policy attracted attention because it clearly defined the struggle against the Chinese Communist Party.
Trump’s Mount Rushmore speech may likewise be described as a historic declaration of his determination to defeat communist forces within the United States.
The Trump administration is thoroughly anti-communist.
The major media harshly criticized the Mount Rushmore speech as an attempt to intensify social divisions.
In reality, however, it is the left that is inflaming racial conflict and dividing the American people.
Trump’s forceful declaration that they must never be permitted to take over the United States undoubtedly encouraged many grassroots conservatives.
Will the United States defend its founding ideals and traditional values under Trump, or will it advance along the road to revolution under Biden, who is manipulated by the radical left?
Although it has received almost no discussion in Japan, the coming presidential election is the ultimate choice upon which the very character of the United States depends.
