Who Are the Anti-Nuclear Activists, Really? The Silence After North Korea’s Nuclear Test

Following North Korea’s 2016 nuclear test, the lack of response from Japan’s anti-nuclear movement exposed a fundamental inconsistency. If radiation risk were their true concern, their silence would be inexplicable. This essay argues that this discrepancy reveals the real nature and motivations of anti-nuclear activism in Japan.

I have a capable friend who is well versed in the hidden dynamics behind current affairs.
Some years ago, I was shocked to learn from him that a widely known public figure was, in fact, a resident Korean in Japan.

The reason was simple.
With that single remark, I immediately understood that it was the mass media that had spoiled this celebrity.
In an instant, I grasped why he had been a flawed individual.
If my friend knew this fact, then media insiders must also have known it.
There was no reason whatsoever to conceal his background.
Osaka, for example, is a region with a large population of resident Koreans, and I have had many close acquaintances among them.
Living while hiding something that need not be hidden can never be healthy for the mind.

Recently, while dining with this friend, the topic turned to the criminal who has persistently caused me great harm.
He had previously said that the man’s obsessive behavior was incomprehensible.
Then he added,
“Lately, I have begun to suspect that the man might be a North Korean agent.
If you think that way, his behavior suddenly makes sense.”

I was surprised by the sudden suggestion, but replied that such a possibility could not be dismissed.

Yesterday, news abruptly broke that North Korea had conducted a nuclear test.
One detail immediately caught my attention.
The epicenter was reported to be at zero meters underground.

Just as I was thinking, “Wait, is the radiation really safe?”
the news reported that observation aircraft would be dispatched to measure radiation levels and issue a report.

Those who conduct anti-nuclear movements together with the Asahi Shimbun should, without exception, immediately direct massive protests toward North Korea.
If they cannot do that, then at the very least, they should gather in front of North Korean–related organizations and consulates throughout Japan,
with Asahi Shimbun editorial writers at the forefront, and raise the loudest possible voices of protest.

Yet, as everyone knows, they do nothing of the sort.
This fact alone clearly reveals who the people engaged in anti-nuclear activism truly are.
Japan and the world must come to understand this reality.
