That Is Why Japan Is Left Speechless—and Others Speak Without Restraint

This essay criticizes Japan’s refusal to seriously debate national defense. By labeling even self-defense as “right-wing,” the media fosters avoidance and silence, leaving Japan unable to respond while others speak and threaten freely.

That is why one side is left to be spoken at endlessly, while the other speaks without restraint.

The following is a continuation of the previous chapter.
If a state truly has the will to protect its citizens, then until concrete measures are established regarding “how to defend Japan” and “how to deprive others of the freedom to press the button,” these issues should remain the nation’s highest priority.
However, present-day Japan has not even reached that level.
Despite the fact that to anyone in the world the Self-Defense Forces look like nothing other than a military—and are even labeled in English as the “Japan Self-Defense Forces”—they are still not acknowledged as a military, while newspapers and other media mock even the act of “thinking about self-defense” as “rightward drift.”
(Note: self-defense is neither an ideology nor a belief, and therefore has nothing to do with concepts such as right or left.)
Rather than war or armament, Japan continues to flee in “extreme” fear even from regional conflicts or disputes.
The attitude of “I don’t want to think about it, I don’t want to discuss it, it’s too much trouble” is eagerly transformed by the media into irresponsible yet plausible-sounding phrases such as “we should not think about it, we should not debate it… for the sake of being trusted in Asia,” which at first glance appear peaceful.
That is why Japan is endlessly talked down to, and why those who speak against it feel free to say whatever they want.
To be continued.
