Encountering Kayama Matazō at Kyoto Porta—A Moment That Surpassed Even Tenryū-ji—

At Kyoto Station’s Porta underground gallery, the author encountered again a work by Japanese painter Kayama Matazō—previously seen at Tenryū-ji. Yet on this day its brilliance struck instantly and more deeply than before, capturing the power of time and place in experiencing art.

I had seen this painting about twice at Tenryū-ji, yet today I felt his greatness far more instantly.

Kyoto Station’s underground mall Porta regularly and naturally carries out such wonderful exhibitions.

Walking around the gallery, after passing before Domoto Inshō, I found myself standing before Kayama Matazō.

Before this painting as well, my friend and I spoke in unison.
“Kayama Matazō truly is remarkable.”

I had seen this painting about twice at Tenryū-ji, yet today I sensed his brilliance more instantly than ever.
