Reexamining Taiwan and China: The Case for Stronger Japan–Taiwan Ties
Sekihei argues that strengthening ties with Taiwan is essential for Japan as it confronts China.
He emphasizes that the People’s Republic of China has never governed Taiwan and that historically and legally Taiwan stands separate from China.
Closer Japan–Taiwan–U.S. cooperation is presented as vital for regional security.
The People’s Republic of China was established in 1949, but it has never governed Taiwan even once.

The following continues from the previous chapter.
As Japan moves forward in confronting the Chinese empire and in order to protect itself, now is precisely the time to strengthen relations with Taiwan.
If Taiwan were taken by China, there is a very high possibility that Japan could suffer the same fate.
The United States is also expected to strengthen its relations with Taiwan.
It is now moving to enact the Taiwan Travel Act.
Until now, visits to Taiwan by U.S. government officials were restricted, but these restrictions are to be lifted.
Japan, too, should steadily deepen exchanges with Taiwan.
If Taiwan remains isolated and without support, it will not be able to continue defending its independence.
“Kojien” Is a ‘False Dictionary’!
However, in the recently published seventh edition of Kojien, the description of “Taiwan” is listed as part of the “People’s Republic of China.”
I believe this is deliberate, but it is entirely contrary to fact.
Before the war, Taiwan was part of Japan.
However, after Japan lost the war, the Empire of Japan was dismantled.
At that time, Taiwan was left behind.
It did not come to belong to any country.
Seizing upon this, the Republic of China government led by Chiang Kai-shek, after being defeated by the Communist forces, moved into Taiwan and seized it on its own initiative.
It has nothing whatsoever to do with the People’s Republic of China.
The People’s Republic of China was established in 1949, but it has never governed Taiwan even once.
From the standpoint of historical developments, international law, and effective control, Taiwan has absolutely nothing to do with China.
To be continued.
