Ninnaji 2026/4/8, Part One—A Dedication of Rachmaninoff’s Lilacs and How Fair This Spot—
The first installment of a dedication of Rachmaninoff’s Lilacs and How Fair This Spot to the cherry blossoms of Ninnaji on April 8, 2026.
Through performances and songs by Ashkenazy, Nobuyuki Tsujii, Lyubov Petrova, and Anna Netrebko, it sends the stillness and beauty of Ninnaji out to the world, and concludes with a selection of carefully chosen photographs of Ryōanji.
To the beauty of Ninnaji on April 8, 2026, I wished to dedicate Rachmaninoff’s Lilacs and How Fair This Spot.
This work is the first installment of that dedication.
In this video, piano and voice are placed in alternation, in order to send to the world that beauty, that stillness, and the very breath of the Japanese spring.
The audio sources were selected from performances and songs publicly available on YouTube.
The order is as follows.
Lilacs, piano: Ashkenazy.
Lilacs, voice: Lyubov Petrova.
Lilacs, piano: Nobuyuki Tsujii.
How Fair This Spot, piano: Ashkenazy.
How Fair This Spot, voice: Anna Netrebko.
And at the end, I have placed a selection of carefully chosen photographs of Ryōanji.
This video is my dedication to the cherry blossoms of Ninnaji.
