The Swiss embassy in China has issued a statement calling to remove a Chinese media report on the new coronavirus that cited a fictitious Swiss biologist as the source of the “false news.” It sent out the statement via the embassy’s Twitter account by August 12.
Regarding a person named “Wilson Edwards” who has expressed doubts about the World Health Organization’s demand for an investigation into the origin of the new corona, the statement read, “If he exists, I want to meet him! This would be false news,” it specified.
It is probably false news,” it said, adding that no registered resident of the same name in Switzerland.
This person has appeared on CGTN, the international broadcast of China’s state-run Central Television, and an English-language newspaper affiliated with the People’s Daily in the Global Times.
In July, he reportedly took to Facebook and Twitter to raise concerns about the WHO’s independence in response to the WHO’s proposal to conduct additional research on the origin of the virus in China.
The article also said that WHO-affiliated scientists are under “strong pressure and threats” from the US.
WHO Director-General Tedros has asked for China’s cooperation to conduct additional research in Wuhan and other areas, but the Chinese government has not responded.
