Two Girls — A Mother and Daughter I Saw at a Public Housing Complex in Osaka

Two Girls.

2010-8-19
This morning, as I rode in a taxi along the same road I always take.

It was only recently that I learned there were what are commonly called public housing buildings in this place near one of Osaka’s most prestigious districts.
Having worked in real estate… I was truly astonished that I had not known about them until now.

One monument to Japan’s miraculous recovery stands in this place, which can now, without exaggeration, be called a prime location: three low-rise reinforced-concrete residential buildings.

From between them, a small elderly woman and her equally elderly daughter
came walking toward a vehicle for elderly care that was waiting by the road.

Holding each other’s hands, with smiles like the sun,
the two of them shone just like girls.

Whether one is famous or unknown has nothing at all to do with it.
True happiness—true happiness that is not found in Tokyo—

this morning, these two girls taught me what it is.
