March 15, 2011 — The Washed-Away Oil Tank, Information Concealment, and the Folly of Losing 51 Trillion Yen

On March 15, 2011, the author learned that the tsunami had washed away emergency oil tanks—yet this fact had been concealed, fueling needless panic. He condemns the government and media for causing the Tokyo Stock Exchange to lose 51 trillion yen in two days, insists Fukushima was unlike Chernobyl, and calls for building the world’s strongest infrastructure nation.

On March 15, 2011, upon hearing an NHK report, the author learns that the cause of the Fukushima nuclear plant’s power loss was the tsunami washing away its emergency fuel tanks. The author expresses strong outrage at the government’s handling of the disaster, arguing that the concealment of this fact caused unnecessary anxiety and market turmoil, leading to a 51 trillion yen loss. The author also emphasizes Japan’s nature as a disaster-prone archipelago, advocating for a future with more robust infrastructure and lamenting the absence of a true leader.

I just saw a report on NHK saying that the emergency power diesel tanks were washed away by the tsunami, and that was the cause.

If that’s the case, all the more reason why that moronic fool should have been running around getting supplies instead of wasting time on his so-called inspection tour. If what was needed couldn’t be gathered from all over Japan, they should have instantly requested it from the US or any other country that had what was required.

Also, a nuclear expert who worked on Chernobyl and built the massive “sarcophagus” to cover it said that this accident is completely different from Chernobyl… This time, the earthquake hit, and it automatically shut down as designed… Chernobyl was an accident where nuclear fission was progressing out of control during operation. … This incident is one where the diesel tanks were washed away by the tsunami, and they are struggling to lower the temperature… it’s completely different from Chernobyl… and a sarcophagus is not needed.

I will never forget that all the secondary disasters since the earthquake—the stock market crash being the most prominent—are the responsibility of those who created that kind of leadership.

Besides, I had no idea that the diesel tanks were washed away by the tsunami until this very moment. I believe that if everyone had known, they wouldn’t have felt this extra anxiety and distrust.

Who concealed this information until today? If the facts had been reported as they were, wouldn’t everyone have understood? If so, we would have been able to say and feel, “Do your best.” On the contrary, who amplified only unnecessary anxiety? Who carried out this ridiculous concealment?

It’s natural for tanks to be washed away during a once-in-a-millennium earthquake, and no one would be so foolish as to blame them for it. And in the end, we wouldn’t have suffered the absurd consequence of losing 51 trillion yen in market capitalization from TSE 1st Section companies over two days. I believe that it is precisely foot soldiers who do such things and cause such outcomes. Those responsible for this stupid information concealment should be held accountable for the majority of this 51 trillion yen loss.

Wasn’t the forecast from the Earthquake Prediction Society extremely accurate this time? I think you all know this, but I believe it was the day before yesterday they said on TV that there was a 70% chance of a magnitude 7 class aftershock occurring within the next few days. The recent earthquake was exactly as they predicted… The magnitude itself might have been a bit lower… The apartment building I live in, in Osaka, shook in a way that could make you seasick… which has become a chronic condition for me since the Great Hanshin Earthquake (laughs)… The apartment I live in is an old, very ordinary one, so I have some anxiety about it.

This only reinforces my belief that our country is the “Disaster Archipelago of Japan.”

Therefore, we must now build the world’s strongest construction state… Even in this reconstruction, if it is physically impossible to protect the coastal areas from a repeat of this, let’s build the most robust cities in the world in the inland areas! The proper general for that task… (rest of the phrase omitted). I am convinced that the only person for the job is the one who has been mislabeled as a “construction politician” for the past 20 years and treated as a villain, as the successor to Kakuei Tanaka.

In general, when hit by the largest earthquake and unprecedented tsunami in the last few hundred years, or even in human history… Of course, emergency diesel tanks would be washed away, and it’s only natural for unexpected failures to occur. The plant’s operation automatically shut down as designed. The reality was that the accident was in no way comparable (meaning, much less severe) to Chernobyl, and the genuine nuclear scientist and engineer who built the sarcophagus said that covering it with one was completely unnecessary. And yet, people were made to feel anxious as if the world was going to end and Japan was going to be contaminated. Who caused this? … Without a doubt, it was the fools in the current administration… I was suspicious from the very beginning… Tokyo Electric Power Company should have had Japan’s best and most elite professionals. That moronic fool, who had me and every other Japanese person with eyes witness the catastrophe on NHK’s live broadcast only 50 minutes after the shaking started, wasted precious time on a foolish inspection tour. He made it clear to people like me that his mind was only focused on what the television cameras would see, and in the process he wasted a precious day. Not only that, but he also obligated Tokyo Electric Power Company to provide unnecessary reports at a time of emergency… The very act of his inspection must have created unnecessary pressure and significantly delayed work on solving the problems and procuring the needed fuel… As a result, TEPCO’s explanations were also delayed, disjointed, and a complete mess… and what made it truly decisive was the completely pointless press conference by those people from the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.

And without even realizing how useless they were… they treated the situation as their stage for self-promotion… even though a nuclear-related accident was happening… and at the end, the Prime Minister and Chief Cabinet Secretary appeared as if they were performing some kind of great judgment. I truly believe that these are people who have only ever played politics on television.

Instead of doing that, they should have been doing what they are doing now… since the emergency fuel tanks were washed away by the tsunami from the very beginning. Instead of wasting time on that moron’s idiotic inspection tour—a transparent attempt to gain popularity—he could have used that time to turn the situation around.

If they had, everything would make sense… TEPCO has been a group of Japan’s super-elites since the time of Kazutaka Kigawada. They are a group of people who are far more intelligent than those moronic fools. … I believe things would not have been so delayed and messy.
