China’s Space Strategy and the Capabilities of the PLA.A Warning to a Japan That Neglects National Defense.
It examines China’s long-term space strategy centered on the BeiDou satellite network and the Tiangong space station.
The article discusses the detection capabilities of the People’s Liberation Army and their implications for anti-ship ballistic missile operations against the U.S. Navy.
It concludes with a warning that Japan, which avoids serious discussion of national defense, risks losing the ability to protect itself.
February 1, 2019.
Japan detests military elements and does not seriously think about national defense.
Such a country cannot defend itself by its own power.
We must remember that a country like that cannot truly be called a nation.
The following continues from the previous chapter.
Capabilities of the People’s Liberation Army.
Regarding the operation of a global all-weather Earth observation system, China explains that it is a civilian satellite network.
BeiDou’s positioning accuracy is said to be about 2.5 meters, which is inferior to that of American satellites.
How should China’s announcements be interpreted.
Here is Mr. Obara’s explanation.
“The satellites of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army place great importance on detecting and identifying objects on the ground, and their capabilities should be considered higher than those of BeiDou, which is described as a civilian network.
The PLA claims that its detection range over the Pacific reaches five million square kilometers.
They say that within such a vast sea area they have acquired the detection capability necessary to attack U.S. Navy vessels with anti-ship ballistic missiles.”
The launch of the BeiDou constellation will be completed by 2020.
Further strengthening it will be China’s own space station Tiangong, scheduled for completion by 2022.
While China is preparing to complete a manned long-duration space station, the future of the International Space Station, in which fifteen countries including Japan, the United States, and Russia participate, is uncertain.
The Trump administration has announced that it will end funding by 2025 and transfer the operation of the ISS to the private sector.
Russia is exploring the construction of its own independent space station, while Europe plans to continue its space programs.
It is still unclear how the ISS will continue or what form the space policies of each country will take.
One thing is clear.
The worst situation, in which China alone possesses a space station and monopolizes space, must be avoided.
One truly senses the real threat of China’s long-term strategy and the persistent will of a continuing state.
Japan detests military elements and does not seriously think about national defense.
Such a country cannot defend itself by its own power.
We must remember that a country like that cannot truly be called a nation.
