China’s “Honey Trap” Espionage and Japan’s Dangerous Naivety — What the MI6 Report Reveals

According to a report submitted by MI6 to the British Prime Minister, Chinese intelligence agencies have used female spies and honey-trap tactics to obtain classified information.
Similar incidents have reportedly occurred in Britain, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.
This essay highlights the reality of China’s intelligence operations and Japan’s dangerous lack of awareness regarding such espionage tactics.

To believe that the former MEXT vice-minister who frequently visited sex establishments in Kabukicho, Shinjuku was not a target of their operations only proves how little Japan understands about them.

I will repost the chapter originally published on January 9, 2018 titled: “In a report submitted to Prime Minister Cameron, Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service MI6 pointed out that Chinese female spies seduce MI6 agents through honey traps and steal classified information.”

Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service MI6 pointed out in a report submitted to Prime Minister Cameron that Chinese female spies seduce MI6 agents through honey traps and steal classified information.

An official from British intelligence stated that Chinese female spies pose an even greater threat than the extremist organization ISIS.

According to many British media reports, Chinese authorities sent as many as one hundred attractive women to seduce intelligence officers and obtain classified information.

If the target did not fall for the temptation, traps would be set to blackmail them.

Internal MI6 documents reveal that MI6 members and their families are primary targets of Chinese intelligence operations.

Former MI6 officials involved in business dealings or interests related to China and Hong Kong have become the biggest “prey” for Chinese spies.

Many former British agents have reportedly already fallen victim to Chinese female spy honey traps.

MI6 documents also warn that former officials in other British government departments are also targets of Chinese intelligence activities.

Veteran Chinese legal scholar Zhao Yuanming states:
“China’s economy has been developing rapidly, and as demand expands in many areas, it has become necessary to quickly obtain technological and military information from Western countries.
Since such information cannot be obtained through legitimate channels, these methods are used to gather intelligence.”

In recent years, Chinese female spies have reportedly seduced foreign diplomats and political leaders visiting China, including high officials from Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea.

To believe that the former MEXT vice-minister who frequently visited sex establishments in Kabukicho, Shinjuku was not a target of such operations only proves how ignorant Japan is about them.

In 2011, three consuls at the South Korean Consulate General in Shanghai leaked phone numbers of senior officials including the South Korean president, and they were suspected of having fallen into the trap of a female spy.
The three consuls were subsequently sent back to Korea.

In the same year, Taiwanese media reported that a Taiwanese army major had been trapped by a female spy from the Chinese Communist Party.
The woman was revealed to be a special operations major from China’s Ministry of Public Security.

In March 2002, a diplomat from the Japanese Consulate General in Shanghai committed suicide.
He was suspected of having been trapped by a Chinese female spy and pressured to provide confidential information, ultimately taking his life under that pressure.

Veteran Chinese legal scholar Zhao Yuanming states:
“Using beautiful women or handsome men as spies is very common.
Any type of information can be obtained at low cost in this way.
What Britain revealed this time is only the tip of the iceberg.
Not only Britain but also the United States and Japan are facing similar problems.”

Zhao Yuanming also points out that countries targeted by such honey-trap spies can lose enormous amounts of confidential information.

He explains:
“For example, military secrets.
Billions are invested in the development and manufacture of new weapons, aircraft, and missiles.
Yet overnight that information may fall into someone else’s hands, allowing them to easily acquire advanced technologies.”

Last November, the British newspaper The Times reported that Chinese intelligence agencies gather information by trapping British officials through extramarital affairs, sexual relationships, and personal friendships.

Chinese authorities are also believed to recruit large numbers of students and civilians, in addition to clerks and military intelligence officers, to collect information.

Wu Fan, editor-in-chief of the American magazine China Affairs, states:
“Spy organizations around the world collect intelligence and use various means to defeat their enemies, including the use of attractive individuals.
However, Chinese authorities are particularly skilled at using such tactics.
They employ the same methods not only against Britain but also against Japan and South Korea.
Other countries also use similar methods to counter China.”

According to the book Jiang Zemin: The Man, in May 1991 when Jiang Zemin visited the Soviet Union as China’s General Secretary, he was seduced by a Soviet female spy named Karava.
It is said that this later triggered Jiang Zemin to sign unequal treaties with Russia, transferring more than one million square kilometers of Chinese territory to Russia.
