The Manipulation Claiming “70% of Okinawans Oppose It.”Malicious Reporting That Disguises 37.6% of Eligible Voters as “the Will of the Prefectural People.”
This essay criticizes the reporting stance of TV Tokyo’s WBS regarding the Okinawa prefectural referendum, exposing the manipulation by which the figure of “71.74% opposed” was presented as though more than 70% of all Okinawan residents opposed the project.
By showing with concrete numbers that the actual proportion of opposition votes amounted to only 37.6% of all eligible voters, it sharply questions the malice and political intent behind such reporting on Japan’s national security.

Out of 1,153,591 eligible voters on the day, the 434,273 votes cast in opposition amounted to only 37.6% even of the eligible voters, and were absolutely not 70% of the prefectural people.
I had thought that TV Tokyo’s WBS was still a comparatively decent news program, so I had been watching it especially often recently, but perhaps because its parent company is the Nikkei newspaper, which is like a quasi-Asahi Shimbun…last night it carried out a typical act of information manipulation.
They said that new construction was proceeding at Henoko, where more than 70% were opposed…as usual, a woman who is no more than an employee, while being called an anchor, commented with an expression plainly showing her intent to criticize Japan and the Japanese government, without harboring the slightest doubt.
Naturally, I instantly noticed their malice.
They were intentionally manipulating information regarding the results of the Okinawa prefectural referendum.
Referendum results.
Eligible voters on the day: 1,153,591.
Voter turnout: 52.48%.
Total votes cast: 605,385.
Valid votes: 601,888 (99.42%).
In favor: 114,933 (18.99%).
Opposed: 434,273 (71.74%).
Neither: 52,682 (8.70%).
Invalid votes: 3,497 (0.58%).
In other words, out of 1,153,591 eligible voters, the number who cast opposition votes was 434,273, and that proportion amounts to no more than 37.6%.
Out of 1,153,591 eligible voters on the day, the 434,273 votes cast in opposition amounted to only 37.6% even of the eligible voters, and were absolutely not 70% of the prefectural people.
To comment on this as though more than 70% of Okinawan residents are opposed is no exaggeration to call a malicious criminal act.
WBS of TV Tokyo, not only should you know shame, but how do you regard the national defense of Japan.
Or is the reality, as with NHK, that agents from China and the Korean Peninsula have infiltrated and taken control of the news and editorial divisions…that must be clarified.
