Given a 25% Chance to Live — Then Welcomed by a Grey Heron at Heian Shrine

On December 18, 2011.
Two days after being discharged in complete recovery from eight months of hospitalization, I visited Heian Shrine.
Although my doctor had told me that my chance of survival was only 25%, I had made a miraculous recovery.
There, at Heian Shrine, a grey heron appeared to welcome me.
This photo collection records that unforgettable moment.
During my long recovery, I continued my walking rehabilitation every day at Kitano Hospital.
To strengthen my lower body, I walked lap after lap around the wide oval-shaped corridor, together with my IV stand.
At that time, what I always listened to on my iPod was George Harrison’s final album.
As you know, he suffered from a brain tumor, and his life ended far too soon.
I know of no other piece as poignant and beautiful as this one… ♬Marwa Blues♬…
When I rediscovered these photographs, I felt there could be no other music to place in the background but this piece.
This is a work that symbolizes both my miraculous discharge and the deeply moving reunion at Heian Shrine.
