For Whom Does NHK Report? — The GHQ-Era Mindset and the Pathology of Accommodation Toward China and the Korean Peninsula Revealed in Watch9

This passage delivers a severe critique of NHK’s News Watch 9, arguing that beneath its reporting lies the lingering influence of GHQ occupation thinking, an Asahi-style anti-government reflex, and an accommodating attitude toward China and the Korean Peninsula.
Focusing on the Senkaku Islands, influence operations in Okinawa, the South China Sea, constitutional revision, the U.S.-Japan alliance, and the Japan-U.S. summit, it denounces what it sees as the abnormality of prioritizing attacks on the government over the national interest.
It also calls for a fundamental reexamination of NHK’s entrenched left-leaning newsroom culture and of the proper relationship between the nation and public broadcasting.

The time has long since come when those who found employment with, or attached themselves parasitically to, NHK, Japan’s state broadcaster, and who, while receiving some of the highest salaries in Japan, act as spokesmen for China and the Korean Peninsula, must be dismissed and expelled.

Would not all discerning viewers who watched NHK’s Watch 9 last night have thought the same thing?
That the producers responsible for the 7 p.m. news and for Watch 9 must be completely different people.
At a time when, as of yesterday, China had been continuously intruding for roughly 50 days into the contiguous zone around the Senkaku Islands, while the Japan Coast Guard desperately issued warnings not to enter Japanese territorial waters and continued sailing alongside.
At a time when China continued its abnormal military expansion and refused to rule out the use of force against Taiwan.
At a time when China, calling the Senkaku Islands, which are Japan’s inherent territory, one of its core interests, was fully displaying the true nature of a country of “bottomless evil” and “plausible lies,” and was intensifying its specialty of turning white into black by force of assertion.
At a time when, as was made clear by the result that more than half of the just-over-30 percent of Okinawan voters who cast ballots in the gubernatorial election had come under such influence.
At a time when it was evident that influence operations directed at Okinawa were being conducted not only through the Okinawa Times and the Ryukyu Shimpo, which dominate Okinawa Prefecture, but also through social media and other means.
In other words, at a time when China harbored the intention of seizing Okinawa, and the Korean Peninsula, with Sin Suk-ju acting as an agent, was assisting in this, while forces seeking to weaken Japan were operating day and night with Okinawa as their stage.
At a time when China was steadily turning the islands of the South China Sea into military strongholds while completely ignoring the rulings of the International Court of Justice.
At a time when the Asahi Shimbun and NHK kept insisting on treasuring and defending the Constitution that GHQ created and handed down in order to weaken Japan permanently, a Constitution that does not even possess the word “military” and says Japan shall not maintain armed forces, and continued to stir up public opinion absolutely opposed to constitutional revision.
At a time when, in order to crush China’s territorial ambitions toward the Senkaku Islands and Okinawa and defend Japan, nothing short of a powerful, ever-closer, and absolute U.S.-Japan alliance was necessary.
At such a time, NHK’s Watch 9, the news program of Japan’s state broadcaster, produced a report that conveyed absolutely no respect for President Trump of the United States and Prime Minister Abe of Japan, whom the Japanese government had invited as a state guest.
In other words, they are people whose minds are exactly the same as those of the Asahi Shimbun, people who think that being anti-Abe is always innocent.
They are under the delusion that criticizing their own country’s government is what journalism is.
They are sufferers from infantile leftism who believe that, at any rate, criticizing the government is journalism.
There is Arima, a so-called anchor, little more than a shallow union-activist type.
And there is Kuwaoko, whose mind was formed by growing up reading the Asahi Shimbun, who brandishes pseudo-moralism and political correctness, and who seems to believe that glaring into the camera is journalism.
To conceal that ulterior motive, she scatters smiles more than necessary.
In one sense, she is the most malicious kind of announcer.
As the result of their infantile leftism reaching its extreme, they have come to think, unbelievably, that they are greater than Prime Minister Abe and President Trump.
That is the reporting of Watch 9.
And by expressing that openly on the screen, it is a preposterous program trying to brainwash the Japanese people.
Just as I myself was once merely one of those Japanese citizens who subscribed to the Asahi Shimbun and watched NHK and the news programs of the various broadcasters, so too many Japanese people knew absolutely nothing, until August five years ago, of one fact.
GHQ used the Asahi Shimbun and NHK.
It used them to permeate occupation policy throughout the Japanese people.
Japan had been a bad country.
The government is always bad, but the people are righteous.
This kind of brainwashing, which reduces people to a mental age of 12, was carried on for a long time at NHK through a program called “Shinsō wa kō da.”
With exactly that same mentality, or making use of it, they are trying to brainwash the Japanese people, regarding that as journalism, assuming that their own opinions are absolutely correct, and trying to steer the Japanese people in the direction of those opinions.
Because they speak with the outward appearance of moralists, they are all the more malicious.
As for the documents merely brought in by Maekawa, I have never heard that NHK was a journalistic institution that had ever conducted any thorough independent investigations of its own.
Yet that same broadcaster, which had continued to report as truthful works produced by left-wing documentary makers parasitically living off NHK and the taxes of the Japanese people, claimed regarding documents merely brought in by Maekawa that, thanks to NHK’s thorough investigation, internal documents had been discovered.
Thus Arima openly made comments attacking the Abe administration by uttering lies identical to those of one-party Communist China and the Korean Peninsula.
And he did so while receiving one of the highest salaries in Japan, paid for by the people’s taxes.
Without question, they are people possessed of minds equivalent to those of the Asahi Shimbun, and at their foundation lies the notion that being anti-Abe is always innocent.
That is why they wanted, no matter what, to belittle this latest Japan-U.S. summit.
They did not want it to become an achievement of Prime Minister Abe.
They did not want the Liberal Democratic Party to win an overwhelming victory in the coming House of Councillors election.
They wanted to crush the momentum toward constitutional revision.
And so, unbelievably, during the visit conducted as a state-guest schedule on this occasion, they went searching for faults in the Japan-U.S. summit itself and reported it critically.
They reported in the utterly incurable posture that they themselves were more correct than Prime Minister Abe and President Trump, and stood above a prime minister and a president.
These are infantile leftists who are polluting newspapers and television stations throughout the world.
In exactly the same manner as the despicable opposition politicians, such as those of the Constitutional Democratic Party, who can only be called traitors and enemies of the nation, seize even upon the tail end of a president’s words and make petty attacks, Watch 9 too goes looking for faults.
They are truly contemptible people.
The persons responsible for the production and programming of this broadcast cannot possibly be genuine Japanese.
Within that same program, they gave major coverage to North Korea’s absurd and foolish accusations.
Namely, they projected their own ideology onto North Korea’s outrageous words that Japan had not settled accounts with the past, effectively saying: that is exactly right.
The fact that such a program is still being produced under the name of NHK is one of the greatest weaknesses and problems of our country.
For the time has long since come when the producers and related personnel of NHK’s Watch 9 ought to know that it is in fact the Korean Peninsula itself that must settle accounts with and reflect upon the past.
The time has long since come when the Japanese people must strip the broadcasting license from a station that continues to produce such programs.
And the time has long since come when those who found employment with, or attached themselves parasitically to, NHK, Japan’s state broadcaster, and who, while receiving some of the highest salaries in Japan, act as spokesmen for China and the Korean Peninsula, must be dismissed and expelled.
