Expo 2025: A Sunset of Beauty and Awe — Atomic-Cloud-Like Skies and Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings
The sky above Expo 2025 Osaka changes from gold to crimson, from crimson to violet, and finally into the deep colors of night.
This film, running for more than nine minutes, brings together photographs of the sunset and of the sky and clouds as they transformed from moment to moment.
Among them are several extraordinary scenes in which the immense illuminated clouds can only be described as resembling atomic clouds.
They are, of course, entirely natural cloud formations.
Yet the sight of those enormous clouds rising into the sky, burning red beneath the fierce light of the setting sun, is at once magnificent, beautiful, and profoundly awe-inspiring.
This is not merely a collection of beautiful sunset photographs.
These images capture moments when the overwhelming creative power of nature—and its ability to inspire something approaching fear and reverence—appeared above the Expo grounds.
The Grand Ring is the architectural realization of an inspiration born in the mind of a single genius, Sou Fujimoto, brought to life through Japan’s long tradition of wooden architecture, intelligence, technological mastery, aesthetic sensibility, and extraordinary precision in construction.
Above this immense wooden circle, light and clouds continually change their forms, transforming the entire Expo site into a landscape that seems almost beyond this world.
The music is the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings in C major, Op. 48.
It is performed by the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan.
At the moment its majestic opening rises, the evening sky, the Grand Ring, and the immense masses of cloud become a single monumental stage.
The rich and noble sound of the Berlin Philharmonic strings under Karajan carries the passion, longing, melancholy, and overwhelming vitality of Tchaikovsky’s music.
Each phrase responds to the descending sun, the clouds burning red, the monumental wooden architecture, and the people gathered beneath it.
The sun does not simply set in silence.
It paints the sky and clouds like fire and then disappears beyond the horizon, leaving behind forms so immense and severe that they sometimes evoke the image of an atomic cloud.
In this film, the sunset becomes music, and the sky above Expo 2025 begins to sing through the strings.
Architecture, nature, and music become one within a moment that will never appear in exactly the same form again.
Please watch to the end and experience this Expo 2025 sunset, where beauty and awe exist together, accompanied by Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic in Tchaikovsky’s magnificent Serenade for Strings.
