Toshiro Mifune in a Dream—Akira Kurosawa’s Intensity and Kenji Mizoguchi’s Visual Beauty in Stillness
2010-10-17
The incomprehensible dream I had this morning… Toshiro Mifune in a period film… chasing a foolish woman…
Sword in hand… with that expression on his face…
That expression from Rashomon, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo… though in this morning’s dream, it most closely resembled his expression in Rashomon…
He was chasing her.
What on earth kind of dream is this, I thought, waking up at the same time as on a weekday, even though it was a day off.
As I got out of bed and walked, I thought… Akira Kurosawa is, of course, great,
But I… have always felt somewhat greater admiration for Kenji Mizoguchi, who created… within stillness… a visual beauty with an intensity to rival Kurosawa’s…
Dependent to a great extent, as is widely known, on the thoroughgoing use of low angles that he devised…
Or so my thoughts went.
