Culture Day, When the Past Resonates in the Present—Feist’s “Past in Present,” The Castle of Sand, and the Asahi Shimbun’s Book Review Section
2010-11-3
Perhaps it is because today is “Culture Day.”
So many words are coming into my head…
If I were a wealthy American, I would probably have been writing on an ipad while soaking in a hot spring, as is my holiday custom.
As someone who soaks in a super sento, I am just about to start writing.
I will post what I jotted down this morning before going out.
Incidentally, I stopped last night’s screening of “The Castle of Sand” partway through, but since today, of all days, must be a fitting day for a film, I will post the continuation on Ameba…
Since it allows 30,000 more characters.
Later, I will write what I must write as a reader of more than 40 years: that apart from the lofty pronouncements of its editorial writers up to now…
though over the past few days these seem to have been changing into those of sensible people…
the Asahi Shimbun, particularly in its book review section and the like, must absolutely not disappear…
that the Asahi Shimbun of that kind must absolutely not go under
This will not be in chronological order, but what had been playing in my head since I woke up yesterday morning was Feist’s ♪Past in Present♪…
With this playing, what sort of writing would emerge today, I wondered… and headed to work as usual.
What took shape shortly after I arrived at the office was “The Ten Commandments…”
This morning, before going to the super sento as I customarily do on holidays, I looked up the lyrics online… just as I thought, I said to myself.
“Past In Present” By Feist
The scarlet letter isn’t black
Gotta know who’s got your back
Because they’re right in front of you
Because they’re telling you the truth
So much present inside my present
Inside my present so…so much past
Inside my present inside my past
Inside my present
So, so
Feeling it from dark to bright
When a wrong becomes a right
When a mountain fills with light
It’s a volcano, it’s a volcano
It’s a volcano, it’s a volcano
So much present, inside my present
Inside my present
So, so much past
Inside my present, inside my present
Inside my present
So, so much past
Inside my present
Inside my present…
So, so much past
“The scarlet letter” at the beginning refers to “緋文字”…
The letter the Puritans used to persecute women who had committed adultery…
I think some of you may have seen the film of the same name starring Demi Moore.
