Autumn, When Passing Time Becomes Song — 110 Photographs and Natsuho Murata’s Historic Rome Performance of Sérénade mélancolique | 4K
A day that has passed will never return.
Yet the beauty we encountered that day lives on in photographs.
Eighty-eight photographs taken on October 22, 2026, and twenty-two taken on October 21.
I brought these 110 photographs from two days together with Natsuho Murata’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s Sérénade mélancolique at her 2025 recital in Rome, creating a film in 4K.
Every performance in that recital was historic.
In my previous film, I paired 188 photographs of Kyoto Botanical Gardens with Ysaÿe’s Sonata for Solo Violin No. 4.
This time, I entrust two autumn days to Tchaikovsky’s song.
Sérénade mélancolique.
I do not hear the melancholy of its title simply as a dark emotion.
When we encounter something beautiful, somewhere within us we know that its beauty will not last forever.
That is why we pause.
That is why we listen closely.
That is why I press the shutter.
Listening closely to Natsuho’s violin, I feel that even emotions not yet formed into words can possess a voice of extraordinary richness.
Nostalgia, longing, and feelings kept deep within the heart each find a place in the music.
What the photographs show is the world that stood before my eyes.
Yet when I look at them with music, even time that the camera could not have captured seems to emerge.
Rome in 2025.
The two days in October 2026 when I held my camera.
Things born in different places and at different times now meet within a single work.
These 110 photographs are also 110 moments when I looked at the world and was moved.
Natsuho’s music gives those moments a deeper breath.
Autumn passes.
Yet the love we felt for what is passing does not simply disappear.
I wish to share these two days preserved in photographs, together with this performance, with people around the world.
My hope is that, after watching, a treasured day of your own may quietly return to you.
