Let Your Heart Drift Toward Mount Fuji — A Visual Poem from Miho no Matsubara and Nihondaira, with Debussy’s Complete Petite Suite
Let your heart drift toward Mount Fuji.
June 5, 2025.
I brought together my photographs of Mount Fuji, seen from Miho no Matsubara and Nihondaira, in a 4K film accompanied by all four movements of Claude Debussy’s Petite Suite.
The first movement is En bateau—In a Boat.
The music gently leaves the shore.
As the heart yields to its swaying rhythm, even the hours that hurried past begin to flow more slowly.
In the distance stands Mount Fuji.
Simply there.
As we gaze upon it, the heart that had been searching so urgently for something begins to grow still.
A small boat needs no heavy luggage.
The words we have carried until today, and the feelings we could never put into words, can rest upon the shore for a while.
Not so that we may forget them, but so that we may hold them close once more.
Mount Fuji, seen from Miho no Matsubara.
Mount Fuji, seen from Nihondaira.
From a different place, the same mountain greets us with a different face.
Perhaps our memories are like that, too.
Sometimes, only when we have travelled far away do we begin to see their beauty.
From En bateau to Cortège.
From Menuet to Ballet.
The music begins with a gentle rocking, then finds its stride, dances with grace, and finally rings with the joy of being alive.
It flows, too, through these moments spent gazing at Mount Fuji.
To you, watching this film somewhere in the world:
We may live in different places, speak different languages, and have travelled very different paths.
Yet we can share a moment when beauty leaves us without words.
For this brief journey, let your heart take its time.
Let the music be your little boat, carrying you toward a view of Mount Fuji.
May this landscape find a place in your memory—a quiet shore to which you can return.
