Kishida’s Approval Slump Was Inevitable: Yoshiko Sakurai’s Warning on Failed Leadership and the New Axis of Evil

Journalist Yoshiko Sakurai argues that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s plummeting approval ratings are the natural outcome of his repeated failure to grasp the core of each crisis: from his response to the Unification Church issue after Shinzo Abe’s assassination, to tax hikes and poorly received flat-rate tax cuts, and the mishandled LDP faction fundraising scandal. She warns that Kishida also lacks strategic vision in the face of deepening military cooperation among China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran, where arms production and industrial capacity are tilting in favor of authoritarian regimes. Without constitutional revision and legal reform to secure stable imperial succession, Sakurai contends, Japan cannot correct its distorted national framework. If Kishida continues to postpone these “non-deferrable” tasks, she writes, he should step aside. The column calls for a new LDP leader with conviction and for value-driven policy groups to rise and rebuild Japan as a strong, respected nation.
