A Night of Profound Emotion — Four Choral Pieces That Moved an Entire HallTokyo College of Music High School Annual Concert 2025, Ikebukuro
On November 26, 2025, I attended the annual concert of the Tokyo College of Music High School at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in Ikebukuro. Their extraordinary musical ability, which had already astonished me at the spring concert, reached an even higher level that night. A lady seated beside my friend wept during “Chiisai Aki Mitsuketa,” while I was overwhelmed with grief and deep emotion during “Kono Michi,” “Machiboke,” and especially “Boku wa Uta.”
I told my friend that with this single performance—above all with that final song—the students had fulfilled the most important mission of their lives. This article documents that unforgettable night and introduces the closest YouTube renditions, including the Makuhari Sogo High School Choir’s remarkable performance of “Boku wa Uta.”
On November 26, 2025, I suddenly decided to attend the annual concert of the Tokyo College of Music High School held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre in Ikebukuro.
The reason for this sudden decision will be explained later.
When I first attended their concert this spring, I was astonished.
It is no exaggeration to say that I was completely overwhelmed by the certainty and brilliance of their musical ability.
Last night’s concert was, again, truly magnificent.
A lady was sitting alone next to us.
She reportedly said to my close friend:
“I have also attended concerts by students of Tokyo University of the Arts, but this concert is far better than the performances by the college students at Geidai.”
At the spring concert, thanks to them, I realized the true beauty of vocal music.
Some of the singers from that day were also in yesterday’s choir.
I was able to identify only one of them.
During the fourth piece, Chiisai Aki Mitsuketa, the lady beside my friend was sobbing.
As for me, during the final piece, Boku wa Uta, I felt waves of grief welling up inside me again and again.
During the intermission after the performance, I said to my close friend:
“With this concert alone—especially with this one song—they have already fulfilled what they were meant to accomplish.
They have achieved the most important thing one can accomplish in a lifetime.”
At the same time, I told my friend, “This song is, in every sense, myself.”
For the music in the video, I chose the performance by the Makuhari Sogo High School Choir available on YouTube, because their rendition came closest to the brilliance we heard last night.
From the repertoire of mixed chorus pieces they performed with such extraordinary technical precision and sensitivity—Kono Michi, Machibōke, Chiisai Aki Mitsuketa, and Boku wa Uta—I selected versions on YouTube that most resembled their outstanding performance that night.
