Tenjuan Temple, Kyoto | Autumn Leaves 2025 | Bach St. Matthew Passion
I visited Tenjuan Temple on November 23, 2025.
Quietly situated to the right of the entrance to Nanzen-ji,
Tenjuan is a place I have returned to and photographed repeatedly for over twenty years.
The autumn leaves were just before their peak.
The music chosen for this photographic record is
Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion,
“Have mercy, my God.”
Its duration aligned with the 7-minute-and-52-second visual work
with remarkable precision.
Among several possibilities,
there was no hesitation in making this final choice.
This is not a record of autumn leaves at their height,
but of the moment that came just before.
