Why “Sanbyakudaigen” Was the Exact Description— What the Sankei Feature Revealed —

Written on March 28, 2017, this essay argues that a Sankei Shimbun feature conclusively demonstrates why certain Democratic Party lawmakers were aptly described as “sanbyakudaigen,” while sharply criticizing the Asahi Shimbun’s longstanding reporting practices.

How a Single Newspaper Feature Exposed Political Charlatanism

A 2017 critique linking political opportunism to systemic media failures in Japan.

This is an article that proves my description of Democratic Party lawmakers as “sanbyakudaigen” was precisely on target.
On page five of today’s Sankei Shimbun, there was a special feature titled “Tsujimoto Faces Questions” and “Appears in Emails Between Mrs. Akie Abe and Mrs. Kagoike.”
All Sankei Shimbun subscribers must have read it.
It is an article that demonstrates that my characterization of Democratic Party lawmakers as “sanbyakudaigen” was exactly correct.
That said, do the people at the Asahi Shimbun truly feel nothing is amiss with figures such as Kiyomi Tsujimoto or Mizuho Fukushima?
From Wakamiya Yoshibumi, who led the fabricated reporting on the comfort women issue, to Tetsuya Hakoda, who now writes dubious articles about South Korea, the Asahi Shimbun sent one employee after another to Yonsei University on company-sponsored study programs.
At best, this has resulted in thinking indistinguishable from that of South Koreans themselves, and at worst, it leaves no conclusion other than that they have all been perfectly indoctrinated by South Korean intelligence agencies.
There can be little doubt that the first report on the Moritomo Gakuen issue was written by the Osaka headquarters social affairs department that fabricated the comfort women reporting.
I repeat: three years ago, in August, this newspaper company should have been shut down.
