The Invisible Infiltration Network Behind KASST and North Korea’s Weapons Development

This article examines how the Association of Korean Scientists and Technicians in Japan (KASST) functioned as a procurement and infiltration network supporting North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, revealing ties to abduction operations and covert technological targeting within Japan.

It was previously reported by a South Korean newspaper that the National Academy of Sciences, with which KASST conducted joint research, was identified by the United States to South Korea as a major uranium enrichment facility.
KASST can thus be regarded as a procurement organization for materials used in the development of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons.
Company A, headquartered in Aichi Prefecture, is a manufacturer of special steel indispensable for missile and nuclear development, and is known for research into lightweight engine and transmission components. About ten years ago, North Korea requested to dispatch an inspection team to Company A, but the company reportedly refused.
However, North Korea remained fixated on lightweight technology, and according to public security officials, KASST affiliates appear to have targeted retired employees of Company A and similar firms for contact.
