Childish Claims and the Reality of Nuclear Defense-in-Depth
Claims that nuclear power lacks safety measures ignore the reality of today’s strict regulatory standards. Multiple layers of defense—against tsunamis, tornadoes, and volcanic activity—are mandated under the defense-in-depth concept, exposing the immaturity of simplistic anti-nuclear rhetoric.

The following continues from the previous section.
Statements that are astonishingly childish
He says, “We have come to realize that all three of the pro-nuclear slogans—‘safe, cheap, and clean’—are lies.”
But how much does Mr. Koizumi actually know about the fact that, under the world’s strictest regulatory standards, measures to enhance safety are being implemented at nuclear power plants across Japan?
From the construction of seawalls and installation of watertight doors to countermeasures against tornadoes and volcanic activity, double, triple, and even quadruple layers of protection are being put in place based on the concept of defense in depth.
The regulatory standards also include the preparation of equipment and spare parts, as well as extensive training for operators.
He also claims that “nuclear power is an environmentally polluting industry and not clean at all.”
However, nuclear plants are required to install filtered vent systems—vents that reduce radioactive releases to roughly one-thousandth—ensuring that radioactive materials are not released outside.
For boiling water reactors, installation is mandatory as a condition for restart, while for pressurized water reactors, installation within five years has been mandated.
To be continued.
