Before Severing Ties: Media Reform and Constitutional Revision as Japan’s Path Forward

Amid deteriorating relations with South Korea, this essay argues that Japan should prioritize domestic media reform and constitutional revision rather than emotional confrontation.
Strengthening fact-based journalism, rebuilding national defense, and clearly signaling national resolve are presented as essential steps to safeguard democracy and global stability.

The time has long since come for both the Japanese people and the world to recognize that there is no other way to stabilize the world and create a prosperous Earth grounded in democracy based on intelligence and freedom.

Many Japanese who heard President Moon Jae-in’s press conference today must have thought that severing diplomatic relations with South Korea is now the only option.
Before that, however, I propose that the best course of action would be to abolish the Asahi Shimbun, going back to five years ago in August.
At the same time, strict measures should be imposed on NHK’s news division, reforming NHK into a true public broadcaster focused on visual excellence and sports coverage.
News reporting must strictly convey facts only.
There must never again be childish reporting, emotionally manipulative reporting, or reporting that acts as a proxy for foreign interests.
More than any other measure, this would clearly demonstrate to the international community that Japan will no longer respond to “bottomless malice” or “plausible lies.”
If that still does not suffice, then all exchanges should immediately be severed.
Simultaneously, the Constitution should be revised to meet global standards, and a proper self-defense military established.
Japan must face the reality of being surrounded by nuclear-armed states and establish credible deterrence.
Against nations that revere power, realistic deterrence is essential.
There is no other way to stabilize the world and ensure a prosperous Earth sustained by democracy rooted in intelligence and freedom.
The moment for Japan and the world to recognize this has long since arrived.
