The “Head” and “Body” of Major Newspapers—Questioning the Hypocrisy of Editorials That Defend the Old Order to the Death
2010-10-9
The editorial board member who wrote yesterday’s Asahi editorial…
For example, if we suppose that it was an editorial written in a frantic rush before I could post this essay by Yoshitsugu Tanaka—a towering achievement of the postwar era—and make it known to the whole world…before word of their misdeeds could travel a thousand miles, would not the meaning of that editorial, so utterly steeped in hypocrisy, begin to make sense?
Major newspaper companies are very much like China.
Their heads defend an outdated system to the death, but their bodies are driven by the truths of the world.
Their heads will never receive any prizes, but their bodies receive Nobel Prizes and Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association Awards.
Television probably has terrible bodies as well, compared with newspaper companies, but people with a fragment of the world spirit join those companies, eventually realize that the situation is beyond remedy, and muster the courage to leave.
One of them, Yoshitsugu Tanaka, has, at the age of 65, published an essay that could well be called a towering achievement of postwar Japan…
I have a feeling that Tanaka, my senior, had been reading my writing (laughs).
