2011年3月11日、東日本大震災と巨大津波は宮城県名取市の港町・閖上を壊滅させた。
広瀬川と名取川が太平洋へ注ぐ河口の漁師町であり、築地市場では日本一と評価された赤貝の産地でもあった。
本稿は、その日、故郷が消えた瞬間に書かれた当日の記録である。
On March 11, 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami devastated the fishing town of Yuriage in Natori, Miyagi Prefecture.
Located where the Hirose River and Natori River flow into the Pacific Ocean, Yuriage was known for producing some of the finest ark shells used for sushi in Japan.
This essay is a first-hand testimony written on the very day the disaster destroyed the town.

昨日、今日のニュースで日本中の多くの人は初めて知った名前だと思うが、閖上（ゆりあげ）と言う名前の港町。
清流広瀬川が太平洋に注ぐ前に、秋保温泉の上流を源泉とする名取川と合流し、その名取川となって太平洋に注ぐ海辺の漁師町である。
この港に続く湾で採れる赤貝は築地の寿司ネタでは日本一の評価を得ていた。
例えば帝国ホテルに在る「なかた」は、赤貝は閖上の赤貝と決めていた。

普段は九十九里浜まで続く様な美しい海岸線が広がる町だった。
しかしその海岸線が、まるで地球創世記の様な姿を現してしまった。
津波は町を飲み込み、小学校や中学校等を除いて、町はほぼ全滅したのである。

私の母親は極めて厳しい状況にある。
しかしさっき、小学校で救出を待っていた人たちが自衛隊によって救出されたと連絡が入った。

これを書いている時に友人から電話がかかってきた。
彼女は「教室で伊勢湾台風のビデオを見せられて…」と言った。

私はそれを遮って言った。
今回の地震は人類史上最大級のもので、比較するものなど存在しない。
世界中が通常のニュースを中断してＮＨＫのニュースを流している。
アルジャジーラですらそうなのだ。
ニュージーランドもそうだ。

こんなことは戦争でも出来ない。
一瞬にして日本の東半分の沿岸部を壊滅状態にするなどと言う事は。
阪神大震災の数千倍のエネルギーが放出された。
人類が初めて目にする惨状なのだ。

だからクリントン国務長官が「出来る事は何でもする」と談話を出したのである。

しかしそこまで言った時、私は言葉が詰まった。

気を取り直して私は言った。
ヒロシマ・ナガサキの原爆の、おそらく数千倍のエネルギーが陸地に向かって押し寄せたのだ。

彼女はただ「うーん」と言っただけだった。

昨日から今日にかけての映像を見た世界中の政府や人々には知ってほしい。
己のエゴイズムに捉われて権謀術策に明け暮れる事がどれほど空しい事なのかを。

そうでなければ。
ヒロシマ・ナガサキと同じ様に。
これから更に増えていくおびただしい死者の数と。
地球という名の大地に刻まれた傷は。

Many people across Japan probably heard the name for the first time in yesterday’s and today’s news.
It is a port town called Yuriage.

Before the clear Hirose River flows into the Pacific Ocean, it merges with the Natori River, which originates in the mountains above the hot spring area of Akiu.
From there the river becomes the Natori River and flows into the Pacific Ocean.
Yuriage was a fishing town located at that mouth of the river.

The ark shells harvested in the bay of this port were regarded as the finest sushi ingredient at the Tsukiji market.
For example, the restaurant “Nakata” at the Imperial Hotel had decided that their ark shells must come from Yuriage.

Normally the town faced a coastline as beautiful as Kujūkuri Beach.
But today that coastline revealed a landscape like the dawn of the earth itself.
The tsunami swallowed the town.
Except for places such as the elementary and junior high schools, the town has almost completely disappeared.

My mother is in an extremely serious situation.
But just now I received word that people who had been waiting for rescue at the elementary school were rescued by the Self-Defense Forces.

While writing this, a friend called me.
She said that in class they had been shown a video about the Isewan Typhoon.

I interrupted her.

This earthquake is one of the greatest in human history.
There is nothing to compare with it.
Across the world normal news broadcasts have been interrupted and replaced with NHK’s coverage.
Even Al Jazeera is broadcasting it.
New Zealand as well.

No war could destroy the eastern coastline of half a country in an instant like this.
Energy thousands of times greater than the Great Hanshin Earthquake has been released.
This is devastation humanity has never witnessed before.

That is why the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a statement saying that America would do anything it could to help.

But when I said that, my words stopped.

Collecting myself, I said that perhaps thousands of times the energy of the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had rushed toward the land.

She simply murmured.

“Hmm.”

I hope that governments and people around the world who saw the images from yesterday to today will understand something.
How empty it is to spend their lives trapped in egoism and political schemes.

Otherwise, just as with Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the number of the dead will continue to rise.
And the wounds carved into the earth itself will remain.
