Xi Jinping’s Wolf Warrior Diplomacy and the Silence of the Asahi Shimbun
Drawing on a dialogue between Masayuki Takayama and Eitaro Ogawa in WiLL magazine, this article examines the Chinese Communist Party’s wartime propaganda, Xi Jinping’s “Wolf Warrior” diplomacy, and the disturbing silence of the Asahi Shimbun and NHK.

It is Xi Jinping himself who regards this as a war against the free world, makes people compete in loyalty to the state, and has outlets such as the Global Times spew propaganda that is almost like the old “brutal America and Britain” wartime propaganda, yet the Asahi Shimbun never touches that at all.
The monthly magazines I refer to are must-reading not only for the Japanese people, but for people all over the world.
After all, although they are filled with genuine articles like this one, they cost only 950 yen.
The following is from a special dialogue between Masayuki Takayama and Eitaro Ogawa, published in this month’s issue of the monthly magazine WiLL under the title, “Designate China, the War-Criminal Nation of the Wuhan Virus, as a Terrorist State.”
Masayuki Takayama is the one and only journalist in the postwar world.
Eitaro Ogawa, for a book in which he criticized the Asahi Shimbun in the most natural and justified way, was, unbelievably, sued by the Asahi Shimbun, which is supposed to be an organ of speech, for a large amount of damages, in other words, subjected to a harassment lawsuit.
Even while suffering great financial loss, he has continued to write essays without flinching in the slightest.
He is one of the prides among graduates of the Faculty of Letters at Osaka University.
The Wuhan virus, which has caused more than 300,000 deaths around the world――this is bioterrorism.
What is the truth they want to hide?
Ogawa
It has been a while.
It has been since our dialogue in a magazine two years ago about the Morikake issue.
Takayama
It has been three years since the Moritomo issue came to be discussed in the Diet, yet the opposition parties and the media are still making a fuss, calling it a suspicion and so on.
Starting with Morikake, then the cherry-blossom viewing party, Abenomask, and recently the extension of the retirement age for prosecutors.
Ogawa
The era name has changed, and the international situation is changing dizzyingly.
Nevertheless, only Japan’s opposition parties and media have stopped the hands of the clock.
In the midst of the virus disaster, the “re-investigation team” for the Moritomo issue gathered wearing masks.
Takayama
The Asahi Shimbun carried an editorial entitled, “Is the Analogy of a ‘War’ Against Corona Appropriate?”
It was dated May 6.
Citing Trump, who called himself a “wartime president,” and Macron, who said, “We are at war,” the Asahi Shimbun, from its usual lofty viewpoint, concluded as follows.
“By emphasizing the crisis, some political leaders may wish to heighten their own centripetal force and obtain understanding for measures that restrict the freedom and rights of the people.”
Ogawa
They are probably implying that the Abe administration is like that.
According to an opinion poll, 65 percent support adding an emergency clause to the Constitution.
That was the Sankei-FNN poll of May 12.
The Asahi’s intention to block constitutional revision at all costs is transparent.
Takayama
China sees this moment, when Europe and America are weakened, as a chance, and is plotting to become the new leader of the world.
It is Xi Jinping himself who regards this as a war against the free world, makes people compete in loyalty to the state, and has outlets such as the Global Times spew propaganda that is almost like the old “brutal America and Britain” wartime propaganda, yet the Asahi Shimbun never touches that at all.
Ogawa
Is the Chinese Communist Party giving instructions to the Asahi?
Or is the Asahi merely reading Beijing’s wishes?
Or are they already one and the same at the DNA level?
Takayama
The government spokesmen are also belligerent.
When Zhao Lijian, the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, said that “the U.S. military brought in the virus,” his senior colleague Hua Chunying also called the United States a liar.
The Chinese media call them “war wolves” and treat them as heroes.
It is a reference to the Chinese action film Wolf Warrior.
The film is about the People’s Liberation Army moving to crush a drug cartel, while mercenaries hired by them, former U.S. Navy SEALs, resist, and in the end the People’s Liberation Army defeats the Americans.
It is already saying that America is the enemy.
“Wolf Warrior diplomacy” is indeed wartime propaganda that makes people compete in patriotism.
Xi Jinping has completely cast off the sheep’s clothing of taoguang yanghui, the old policy of hiding one’s capacities and biding one’s time.
The Asahi Shimbun pretends not to see it.
After all, there must be instructions from Beijing.
Ogawa
The Asahi is the same as ever, but NHK is not far behind.
In late April, it broadcast a parody program called “Baribara Cherry-Blossom Viewing Party――A Banquet of Barrier-Free and Diversity,” mocking Prime Minister Abe and Deputy Prime Minister Aso.
Moreover, the guest was Shiori Ito.
Even if one made a huge concession and said it might be permissible for a commercial broadcaster, it is astonishing that a public broadcaster would air such a thing at this timing.
Takayama
Because China’s responsibility for the coronavirus is being pursued, they probably want to divert attention.
If there is no instruction, then it is an extraordinary level of deference to Beijing.
Ogawa
In any case, it can only be thought that there is some kind of intention behind it.
Is it to crush constitutional revision through criticism of the administration, or is something far larger moving behind the scenes……?
