While searching for information about the relationship between South Korea and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes the Academy Awards in the United States, I came across the following article from 2016.
Lee Byung-hun and Others Become Members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
Article List: June 30, 2016 11:13
[LOS ANGELES, Yonhap News Agency] The new members announced on the 29th (local time) by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes the Academy Awards in the United States, included South Korean film directors Park Chan-wook, Lee Chang-dong, and Kim So-young, as well as actor Lee Byung-hun.
Director Park is known for films including “Oldboy,” “Lady Vengeance,” and “Thirst,” while Director Lee has made films including “Peppermint Candy,” “Oasis,” “Secret Sunshine,” and “Poetry.”
Both directors have won awards at major international film festivals and have been recognized for the artistic merit of their work and their directorial abilities.
Director Kim’s works have also frequently been invited to international film festivals, while Lee Byung-hun has entered Hollywood and is actively working there.
Members of the Academy have voting rights to select the Academy Award winners.
Last year, film directors Im Kwon-taek and Bong Joon-ho, along with actors Choi Min-sik and Song Kang-ho, were among those selected as members.
Of this year’s (2016) 683 new members, racial minorities, including Koreans, accounted for 41%.
*The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, too, is something like the United Nations and will probably come increasingly under the control of South Korea and China, countries of bottomless evil and plausible-sounding lies.
Japan needs to remain attentive to anti-Japanese propaganda by South Korea and China directed at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, just as it does with the relevant United Nations agencies.
After all, the United States is a country whose national character is, for better or worse, rather rough-and-ready.*
