FNN has learned through its reporting that, at the G7 summit, U.S. President Donald Trump had sharply criticized South Korean President Moon Jae-in over two days, saying such things as that he “could not be trusted.”
Mr. Trump criticized President Moon on the night of the first day of the G7, or Group of Seven, summit being held in France, while the leaders were discussing diplomacy and security affairs, when he reportedly began by saying, “A person named Moon Jae-in cannot be trusted,” and other such remarks.
According to government officials, Mr. Trump further criticized him by saying, “Kim Jong-un told me, ‘President Moon is a person who tells lies.’”
Then, at the dinner held on the night of the second day, regarding President Moon, Mr. Trump reportedly raised the question, “Why did such a person become president?” and there was also a scene in which the leaders seated with him looked surprised.
Prime Minister Abe did not react to this series of remarks.
Within the government, there is a view that, behind Mr. Trump’s remarks, he had in mind such matters as South Korea’s abandonment of the Japan-South Korea GSOMIA, or General Security of Military Information Agreement.
