Union Full-Time Activists— Organizations and Funds Behind the Okinawa “Local Struggle” —

Based on Newsweek’s reporting, this chapter details the reality of full-time union activists dispatched to Okinawa, the abundant funds sustaining them, and the background of communist-affiliated labor unions from Osaka.

This labor union is known as part of the communist-affiliated labor movement in Osaka and for having engaged in fierce internal संघर्ष with the radical C faction.

The following continues from the previous chapter.
(Photo: Onaga gubernatorial election general rally. It can be seen that all union flags are concealed.)
“Just before the opening, when the organizers instruct participants to lower flags and banners, the ‘union smell’ that had filled the venue is concealed, and mainland union members are equally counted as ‘prefectural residents.’”
Here, Newsweek dives into the midst of the mainland units.
“H, who conducts daily maritime protests as part of the canoe team, is also one of those dispatched from the mainland by a labor union.
Originally a ready-mix concrete truck driver in Osaka.
Mobilized by construction and transport-related unions for peace and anti-nuclear movements nationwide, he was dispatched to Henoko for a total of one month last year, and from just after the New Year until the end of August this year.”
From just after the New Year for eight months, totaling about nine months.
Such activists are called “gen-tō” within labor unions.
Naturally, one cannot take nine months off work, so becoming a professional activist as a “full-time union staffer” is the only option.
They are people who engage in left-wing activism as an occupation.
Not part-time “professional citizens,” but genuine, unadulterated left-wing activists.
“Full-timers” receive wages equivalent to a salary, plus additional allowances for living and activity expenses on site, and sometimes even hazard pay.
It is not a bad job.
However, it is a solo assignment.
If the concrete truck driver appearing in this article lives such a desolate life every day, it may be difficult for him to return to being the honest, diligent worker he once was.
Still, one cannot help but ask a simple question: do labor unions exist to have such left-wing movements carried out as full-time work?
Originally, labor unions existed to protect workers’ livelihoods and employment conditions, but because ordinary employees are reluctant to take leadership roles, many unions are now effectively controlled by left-wing political parties.
Labor unions collect enormous membership fees deducted directly from members’ salaries and invest them through financial institutions, thereby always boasting abundant funds for struggle.
In the past, frequent strikes required reserves to compensate for wage cuts, but now those reserves simply continue to accumulate.
As a result, they can generously scatter surplus struggle funds into “local struggles.”
The Osaka “construction and transport-related union” mentioned here is probably the communist-affiliated “All-Japan ●● Transport ●● District Ready-Mix Concrete Branch.”
This union is known as part of Osaka’s communist-affiliated labor movement and for having engaged in fierce internal conflicts with the radical C faction.
The sight of communist-affiliated and radical labor unions that repeatedly engaged in internal violence standing shoulder to shoulder and chanting slogans once they arrive in Okinawa is laughable.
That aside, what exactly are these “gen-tō” doing in Okinawa?
“At present, the opposition movement in Henoko consists of protests by H and others at the ‘shore’ and sit-ins blocking the gate in front of Camp Schwab on land.”
To be continued.
