The Naivety of Inviting Xi Jinping as a State Guest: Uyghur, Tibet, Hong Kong, and the Wuhan Virus

March 10, 2020. As the novel coronavirus rages, serious doubts are being raised about Japan’s plan to invite Xi Jinping as a state guest. Despite international criticism of China over Uyghur, Tibet, and Hong Kong, Japan continues to take an astonishingly soft stance.

March 10, 2020
Because of the “bloody suppression” in Uyghur and Tibet and the crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong, China has been fiercely bashed by the international community.
Yet Japan is saying something astonishingly carefree.
Toshihiro Nikai must have laid the groundwork.
The monthly magazine WiLL, which every Japanese citizen must read, carries a serialized dialogue between Shintaro Ishihara and Shizuka Kamei.
The following is an excerpt from the current issue now on sale.
What Kamei says is probably the true feeling of every decent person in the world.
Kamei
“What are we going to do if Xi Jinping comes here bringing the virus with him?”
Ishihara
“When he arrives at the airport, give him a physical examination and send him back.” (laughs)
A country that brings calamity
Ishihara
The novel coronavirus is raging, isn’t it?
Kamei
China is, in every sense, an outrageous country.
A country like that would be better off disappearing from the face of the earth.
In the past, the Yellow Peril was talked about in Europe and America.
It began with Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany.
If I may ride on that, then both now and in the past, it is the Chinese who spread calamity throughout the world.
After all, plague, SARS, bird flu.
They all came from China, didn’t they?
Ishihara
From the Western point of view, Chinese and Japanese are merely the same yellow race.
Kamei
Japan does not cause trouble for other countries, but China is a nuisance to the world.
Because of the “bloody suppression” in Uyghur and Tibet and the crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong, China has been fiercely bashed by the international community.
Despite that, Japan is saying something as carefree as inviting Xi Jinping as a state guest.
Ishihara
Toshihiro Nikai must have laid the groundwork.
Kamei
But the one who ultimately decided it was Shinzo.
He has to say clearly, “Don’t come!”
Otherwise, Xi Jinping will come bringing the coronavirus with him. (laughter)
Ishihara
When Xi Jinping arrives at the airport, they should examine him to see whether he is infected with the virus.
Even if it is a lie, they should say he is infected and send him back. (laughs)
Kamei
That is a brilliant idea. (laughs)
Ishihara
Every day, the news is reporting on the cruise ship that remains anchored at Yokohama Port.
Kamei
I feel sorry for the passengers, but border-control measures must be carried out thoroughly.
This is no time to talk about human rights or whatever.
Japan should not merely restrict entry by travelers from Wuhan.
It should deny entry to all Chinese nationals.
If Japan keeps dragging its feet, the infection will spread more and more.
The rest is omitted.
