Umeda After Sunset — A Visual Poem in 104 Photographs | October 25 & 28, 2026

There are things a city reveals only after daylight fades.

A light we might have passed without noticing in the daytime. A sense of distance that becomes apparent only at night. And that brief interval when the last brightness still lingers in the sky.

I brought together 104 photographs from these two days to make a single film.

The music is the first movement of Brahms’s Symphony No. 3, performed by the Berlin Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado.

The music opens as though drawing a great breath, giving each photograph a deeper sense of time. Its strength and its moments of tenderness echo something of what I felt while walking through the city.

A photograph records the scene before the camera.
But when we return to it, more than the scene comes back. Something of our own time, spent standing in that place, remains within it.

Why did I stop there?
Why did I want to keep that particular light?

What I could not put into words when I took the photographs slowly begins to take shape as I watch them unfold with the music.

The night of October 25 and the dusk of October 28.
Both belonged to Umeda, yet each held a light that would appear only once. The city would still be there the following day. But that sky, that light, and the moment of standing before them would never return exactly as they were.

Perhaps we take photographs because we know this.

The last light of dusk gives way to night.
Across the city, the lights people have kindled remain.

As I brought these 104 photographs together, I walked through those two days once more.
I hope that somewhere among these images, you too may pause and find a memory of your own.
